A Week in the Life of Simon Moyes

A typical week for the 52-year-old orthopaedic surgeon starts in the city clinic in Old Broad Street in Central London on a Monday, treating what he dubs his “weekend warriors” – city workers who have injured themselves during the weekend excesses. Specialising in arthoscopic - or keyhole surgery as its more commonly known, for knee, shoulder, foot and ankle problems, Simon Moyes has seen a growing trend in city workers needing treatment after overdoing it at the weekend.

Whether its injured shoulders or various knee or ankle problems caused by overly competitive active stag weekends or alcohol-induced falls, Simon Moyes has seen it all.

On Tuesday mornings, he is based at the Platinum Medical Centre at the Wellington Hospital in St John’s Wood. Set a stone’s throw from Regent’s Park, in the shadow of the famous old Lord’s Cricket Ground, Simon Moyes sees patients with anything from bunions to anterior impingement, sometimes known as footballer’s ankle, where the tissues in the ankle become trapped between the bones. In the afternoon, he writes medico-legal reports for injury related legal claims. Simon Moyes has 20 years of medico-legal experience and produces around 400 reports a year for personal injury claims – including motor and industrial injuries, repetitive strain injuries, fitness to work and pension appeals.

On Wednesday mornings, Simon Moyes is back at the Wellington Hospital for patient consultations, followed by an afternoon at the city clinic in Old Broad Street.

But on Thursday morning Simon Moyes dons the scrubs as he heads into the operating theatre at Wellington Hospital for his first surgeries of the week. Here he could be removing a torn cartilage from a knee, carrying out an ankle ligament reconstruction or shoulder stabilization, or indeed any operation on the knee, shoulder, foot or ankle.

On average, he operates on 600 patients a year, including professional sportsmen, actors and city professionals.

Simon Moyes has also pioneered a number of new treatments including a minimally invasive procedure for bunion correction which has seen recovery time change from three months to as little as six weeks, making a huge difference to patients’ lives. Simon Moyes uses an innovative procedure called ‘tightrope fixation’ to treat dislocated shoulders, which reduces surgery from two operations to one and recovery time from six weeks immobility to four weeks of resting the upper body.

Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings are typically spent back in the Platinum Medical Centre in Wellington Hospital, before heading back to the operating theatre for further surgery on a Friday afternoon.

And then it’s a relaxing weekend (if not giving a Saturday lecture at the Royal College of Physicians or abroad), before it all starts again on Monday.

So for Simon Moyes no week is ever quite the same. It’s demanding work which requires outstanding concentration and expertise. But he is supported by his superb and loyal staff, Lindsay, Christine and Margaret, who help the week run as smoothly as possible.
